Insulin resistance: What it is, its causes, symptoms and treatment

Insulin is a hormone that is secreted from the pancreas, but insulin resistance is a condition of metabolic syndrome that is temporary if it occurs.

Recognizing it and treating its causes, or chronic in the case of treating its causes.

Which occurs in the body in the case of insulin resistance. When food is digested, it turns into glucose and enters the bloodstream. Then insulin is secreted from the pancreas, where it works to bring glucose into the body’s cells to use it as an energy source or store it in the form of fat if its quantity exceeds the body’s need. But in the case of insulin resistance, the body's cells become unable to receive more glucoseIt remains present in the blood in a large proportion, and the pancreas continues to work to secrete insulin to confront this large amount of glucose present in the blood (hyperinsulinemia), which leads to entering into a state of pre-diabetes (prediabetes) and then to developing type 2 diabetes (Type 2 Diabetes).

What are the symptoms of insulin resistance?

Initially, insulin resistance has no symptoms as long as the pancreas produces insulin to maintain blood sugar levels. But over time, insulin resistance can get worse, and the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin can wear down. The pancreas can no longer produce enough insulin to overcome resistance, resulting in high blood sugar (hyperglycemia), which causes symptoms. Symptoms of high blood sugar include: Increased thirst - Frequent urination - Increased hunger - Blurred vision - Headaches - Infections

Dermatological - slow healing of wounds and ulcers.

Acquired causes of insulin resistance (i.e. if the cause is not genetic):

1- Excess body fat: Obesity, especially excess fat in the abdomen and around the internal organs (visceral fat), is the main cause of insulin resistance. A waist measurement of 101 cm or more for men and 88 cm or more for women is associated with insulin resistance.

2- Lack of physical activity: Physical activity makes the body more sensitive to insulin and builds muscles that can absorb glucose in the blood. Lack of physical activity can have adverse effects and cause insulin resistance, in addition to lack of physical activity causing weight gain

3- Diet: A diet that contains a large amount of processed foods, carbohydrates, and saturated fats causes insulin resistance. The body digests processed foods and carbohydrates very quickly, which leads to high blood sugar. This puts extra pressure on the pancreas to produce too much insulin, which over time can lead to insulin resistance.

How is insulin resistance treated?

Insulin resistance is treated by lifestyle modification, which includes the following:

Follow a healthy diet

Increase physical activity

Reduce excess weight

These lifestyle modifications can increase insulin sensitivity (reduce insulin resistance) . Reducing blood glucose levels. Lowering blood pressure. Reducing triglyceride and cholesterol levels

LDL. Raising good cholesterol levels

You can consult a nutritionist and endocrinologist, as well as your regular doctor to come up with an individual treatment plan that works best for you.
