An unprecedented medical achievement...the first robotic double lung transplant

American surgeons performed for the first time a double robotic operation to transplant entire lungs into the body of a 57-year-old patient suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. For the first time...a double robotic operation to transplant lungs! This was reported on the website of the press service of the New York University Medical Center.

Assistant Professor at New York University Stephanie Zhang said: “The use of automated robots allows us to maximize the chances of success and reduce the negative consequences to the body that surgery brings, as well as reduce the intensity of pain after surgery. “The opportunity to return patients to their normal state is a huge achievement for us.”

The first participant in such an experiment was a 57-year-old American woman, Cheryl Merkar, who in 2010 doctors diagnosed a severe form of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Its development is accompanied by a gradual narrowing of the bronchi as a result of chronic inflammation of the lung tissue, which leads to breathing problems and low oxygen concentration in the blood.

Mercar's condition worsened in 2022 after she contracted a coronavirus infection, which led to her needing a full lung transplant. A suitable donor for this procedure was not found until recently, and doctors took advantage of her, who invited the patient to participate in a robotic lung transplant experiment. Within its framework, the robot made two small incisions between the woman's ribs, and then removed the old respiratory organs and replaced them with healthy lungs.

The procedure was a complete success, opening the way for a more widespread use of robots when performing complex respiratory operations. Zhang hopes that its use will save the lives of several thousand patients suffering from lung damage, as well as reduce the possibility of post-operative complications in these patients.
